We've got a pair of Apple TVs as well as multiple Macbooks. Airplay is not used much, but when it is, it likes to randomly disconnect. It doesn't seem to matter which devices happen to be connected, they'll just randomly drop, anywhere from within 5 minutes of starting playback up to a half hour.

It will function when playing music. In certain cases, AirPlay will stop video playback on a locked device. You can conserve battery life by turning screen brightness down all the way. Just remember to change the Auto-Lock setting back to your preferred setting. This seems to give priority to music streaming and AirPlay processes. It also makes it easier to control music playback and view track information. This flaw is exclusive to Apple TV 4. AirPlay is faster, but less reliable, presumably due to a smaller buffer size. Just accept it and try to make the best of it.
Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled
AirPlay formerly called AirTunes provides Apple users with a way of streaming media from one device to another over a local network, typically their home Wi-Fi. Network issues can present in various ways, and none of that rules out the network, you need to do proper troubleshooting.
